How to Make Summer Flowers Last Longer

Professional Florists like Fiesta Flowers Plants & Gifts have a few tricks up their sleeves to make cut summer flowers stay beautiful for a longer period of time.

Gerbera Daisies:

Gerberas Caisies can last up to 3 weeks in your summer floral arrangement. To make these cheerful blooms stay upright, a professional Florist will use floral wire to support the heavy, large heads on the long stems.

Calla Lilies:

Calla Lilies have a beautiful simplicity that makes them go-to flowers for a summery bridal bouquet.

There is one simple trick you can do to make these flowers keep their beauty far longer. Put the flowers in a bath of tepid-to-warm water. Cut the stems. Transfer the flowers to a vessel with about an inch of cool water – they stems will become mushy if submerged under too much water. Put them in the refrigerator for a couple of hours to rehydrate.

Hydrangeas:

If you notice these flowers in your floral arrangement starting to wilt prematurely, take them out of the arrangement. Gently soak the entire head in cool water for about 10 minutes and then give their stems a fresh cut on a very deep angle. The flowers will pop back to life after being refreshed this way. You can then put them back in your vase.

Zinnias:

Before you put Zinnias in a vase, put the cut section of the stems in boiling water for about 20 seconds. This will help the flowers retain their nutrient-rich sap and enable the blooms to last longer.

Dahlias:

Before you do your floral arrangement, make Dahlias look even more attractive by giving them an overnight hydrating bath. Get rid of the foliage then immerse the length of the stems of the Dahlias in cool water. Make your floral arrangement the following day.

Orchids:

Orchids may look delicate and exotic but they are very hardy flowers. They are lovely displayed on their own in their original pots or simply one large stem in a vase. They can also be used as a focal flower in a bouquet. The flowers will remain beautiful and vibrant if they receive all the water they need.

Poppies:

Poppies are delicate and fragile. If you want the blooms to stay gorgeous, you need to help the flowers retain their life-giving sap. You can do this by swiftly singeing the cut ends of the stems over an open flame to seal the edges.

Floral Ideas for Arranging Summer Flowers with Style

Some inspiration from the following tips from expert florists:

Use fabulous fillers:

Think of having a pretty bouquet designed with more than just big, stunning blooms. Fillers as floral accents add texture, visual interest and color to your arrangement. Thistle, Lavender, Hypericum Berries, and Scabiosa Pods are hardy flowers that will make your floral arrangement stay beautiful longer.

Make simple arrangements using hand-picked blooms:

You don’t always need spectacular exotic blooms to enjoy a beautiful floral arrangement. Freshly picked flowers like Lavender, Daisies, and Dahlias can be just as pretty when placed in a basic flower vessel.

Use one color with varying tones:

Consider an elegant, feminine mix of flowers in different shades of the same color.

Using Ranunculus, Peonies, Sweet Peas, and Roses in varying tones of pink will make a lovely, soft statement. Arrange the flowers in a cluster and add some fern to counterbalance the pink then as a finishing toch, tie the flowers with an accent ribbon.

Make a natural “beachy” centerpiece:

A centerpiece made with a grouping of green Succulents will look clean, beautiful, and crisp.

Put the Succulents in a clear cylinder or square vase for a contemporary, clean look. Fill the vase with pebbles or sand. Put this fresh and contemporary arrangement in the middle of your summer table for a long lasting centerpiece.

Make a Sunflower arrangement with a twist:

People always think of Summer when they see Sunflowers.

Give your bouquet a polished spin by putting the Sunflowers in a vase lined with Calathea Leaves. The striped green undersides of the leaves will hide the Sunflowers’ stems. They will also make the beautiful yellow of the blooms pop.
